INTERNATIONAL HYPERTENSION DAY 2023

World Hypertension Day is an annual event observed on May 17th to raise awareness about hypertension, also known as high blood pressure (HBP). Hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. It usually develops over time which can result from unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as not getting enough regular physical activity. It is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems. Usually, hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90 and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.

This year’s theme is Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer, focusing on combatting low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low to middle-income areas, and accurate blood pressure measurement methods.

World Hypertension Day was first initiated by the World Hypertension League (WHL) in 2005 to highlight the importance of preventing and managing hypertension. The WHL is an umbrella organization that consists of various national hypertension societies and leagues from around the world.

The primary goal of World Hypertension Day is to promote public awareness and encourage individuals to take preventive measures to control their blood pressure. The day serves as a platform to educate people about the risks associated with hypertension, the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, and adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent and manage the condition.

COMMON CAUSES OF HYPERTENSION

  1. Obesity
  2. Too much Sodium (Salt) in diets
  3. Less potassium in diets
  4. Excessive consumption of alcohol
  5. Stress
  6. Cough and Cold Medications (Sudafed and other brands that contain pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine)
  7. A diet low in vitamin D

PREVENTION OF HYPERTENSION

  1. Exercise regularly
  2. Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  3. Watch your weight.
  4. Reduce the intake of alcohol.
  5. Monitor your blood pressure and go for regular checkups.
  6. Reduce stressful activities.
  7. Reduce Salt intake.
  8. Having a good night’s sleep.
